Here are ten things to plan for in the first two weeks of December:

  1. Get any client greeting cards into the mail.
  2. Inform clients if you do not want to receive any more payments this year for tax purposes.
  3. Have your tax professionals verify that you're not in a penalty situation through underpayment of withholding. If you are, pay the difference prior to year-end.
  4. Pay (or charge to your credit cards, which is just as valid) for as many expenses as you can this year if you need to reduce taxable income for your company.
  5. Create a plan to call as many people as you can by the end of January to seek referral business, testimonials, or references.
  6. Pay yourself any expenses owed, mileage allowance, office rent, and other income you're owed by the company.
  7. Plan your personal, professional development activities for next year and schedule them.
  8. Reconfirm dates with first quarter appointments and commitments.
  9. Stock up on supplies that will take you through at least the first quarter and perhaps the first half.
  10. Ensure that you've maximized contributions to retirement and pension plans that do not provide "catch up" through the first quarter of the next year.
