Monthly tips to improve the business and practice of members of the Society for Advancement of Consulting, LLC

Do you want to meet someone whom you think can be especially helpful to you as a buyer, or recommender, or publicity source? Try these techniques:

  1. Send a Fedex or certified mail letter marked "personal and confidential."
  2. Try calling at 8 am or 6 pm, or even on Saturday morning.
  3. Tell the switchboard operator that you want to send a complimentary letter about an employee, so could you have the private email of the person you're seeking.
  4. Host a breakfast or lunch, invite your target to speak on his or her specialty, and get to know them.
  5. Find out what local organizations they belong to, and attend as a guest or member.
  6. Volunteer to work at a charity for which the person also volunteers time.
  7. Network your contacts to find someone who knows someone who knows this person.
  8. Write an article or position paper on a topic you learn may be near and dear to the target and send it to them.
  9. If they are speaking or being honored or are a judge, etc., somewhere, attend and arrange to bump into them.
  10. Google them and use Google Alerts to learn of anything they are doing that may be potential for you to connect.

Believe it or not, all of this is better than "cold calling." And it avoids the gatekeepers and secretaries. (Once a secretary finds out who you are, everything you send will be intercepted, because that is in the job description, so don't call and leave messaged.)
