Distinctions of the Best Organizations According to Global Consulting Group

The Society for the Advancement of Consulting® (SAC®) has over 300 members in nine countries, and has monitored the distinguishing factors of the best organizations, vs. the run-of-the-mill.

"We thought that our clients worldwide might see some patterns in the distinctions that were adoptable for their own organizations and associations," notes SAC CEO Alan Weiss, PhD.

Here's an example from our surveys:

"One unusual strategy which distinguishes the very best companies is counter-cycle investment, which I first learned about while chatting with Herb Kelleher (founder of Southwest Airlines)," reveals David A. Fields of Ascendant Consulting in Ridgefield, CT. "During the boom times, a counter-cycle company focuses full-bore on reducing expenses and streamlining processes, while simply maintaining pace with the competition on products and services. Then, when the downswing inevitably hits and the competition is desperately trimming costs, the counter-cycle company is already in great financial shape and has a wide open field to build business with customers. It is simple, counterintuitive, brilliant and, most importantly, it has worked like a charm in every industry where we've implemented it," concludes Fields.

Fields also brings up less effective strategies he has observed during his ongoing dialogues with CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. "I believe that where you stand determines how far you'll go, and too many companies simply don't know what they stand for. Or, worse, they try to stand for everything," notes Fields. He contrasts Tony Hseih's singular commitment to making customers happy at Zappos.com to one of the world's largest advertising agency's strategic plans, which have no fewer than 25 strategies, visions, purposes, objectives and goals.

"The greatest of all factors in m opinion," says Weiss, "is visionary leadership which embraces employees and customers alike. If you want to rapidly change any organization or culture," he concludes, "start at the top."
